Training Phases for Pointing Breeds
We offer range of training programs suitable for dogs of all ages and skill levels
Phase 1: Foundation & Bird Exposure
On-leash obedience: heel, woah, and recall
Intro to birds and gunfire
Building confidence and drive on birds
Focus on natural point development (no pressure yet)
Phase 2: Steadiness & Fieldwork Fundamentals
Learning to bend in a gun range
Start Teaching “woah” in the field
Teach gunfire conditioning during the flush
Teach steadiness on the bird
Conditioning to the collar
If the dog has retrieve drive, we will teach condition retrieve.
Phase 3: Advanced Steadiness & Retrieve Work
Steady to flush, shot, and fall Backing (honoring another dog’s point)
Retrieve to hand (natural or force-fetch if needed)
Full-field training in cover, terrain, and live bird settings
